Cushion vs Liquid Foundation

Compare cushion and bottled liquid foundation by application, finish, shade and refill format. Find the format that fits your makeup routine.

Choose a cushion foundation for convenient compact application, or a bottled liquid foundation when you prefer dispensing and blending your base separately. Neither format guarantees a particular level of coverage or finish. Check the individual formula, shade and packaging before deciding which fits your routine.

Compare the format first

Feature Cushion foundation Bottled liquid foundation
Application Usually applied with the supplied puff Usually dispensed and blended with fingers or a tool
Portability Compact format can be convenient for touch-ups May require a separate application tool
Coverage Depends on formula and the number of thin layers Depends on formula and application method
Finish Can be luminous, matte or somewhere between Can be luminous, matte or somewhere between
Refill Some ranges offer separate refills Refillability depends on the specific bottle

YSL’s Le Cushion Encre de Peau is presented as a luminous matte cushion with buildable coverage. That example shows why “cushion” does not automatically mean dewy. Other cushions are described differently, while bottled foundations can also offer a range of finishes. Compare the finish statement for the exact version you are considering.

How to apply a cushion

Follow the product directions and press the puff lightly into the cushion. Place a thin layer on the skin with gentle tapping rather than repeatedly dragging the puff. Add a little more only where you want extra coverage. YSL describes working from the centre of the face outward for its cushion; follow the instructions supplied with your own product.

For liquid foundation, dispense a small amount and distribute it with your preferred clean tool. Start where you need the most coverage and soften the edges. Both formats can become heavier-looking when many layers accumulate, so assess the first layer before adding more. Keep applicators clean according to their care instructions and avoid sharing them.

Shade numbers are not universal

A shade called 10 in one collection is not necessarily the same colour as 10 in another. Even ranges from the same brand can use different shade systems. Compare the product’s own shade chart, undertone description and photographs. Screen settings change the appearance of swatches, so a familiar shade reference is more useful than a number by itself.

Check what is included

Confirm whether the listing contains a complete compact or a refill. A refill may need a compatible case, and its name should match the case series. Check the stated contents rather than inferring them from a photograph. For any makeup carrying an SPF claim, follow your dedicated sun-protection routine and do not assume a thin foundation layer delivers the labelled test conditions.

Choose the format that makes your usual routine easier, then compare the exact shade and finish. If you already enjoy your bottled foundation, a cushion may be useful mainly for portability. If you prefer quick application from one compact, it may suit your everyday base. Neither choice requires buying both.
